This May Sound Odd: Unusual Interview Questions

There are some questions that have become nearly a standard in job interviews: Why are you a good fit for this position? Where do you see yourself in five/ten years? Tell me about yourself? These questions provide the interviewer with crucial information in order to make the best hiring decisions, but their prevalence incites expectation which often produces rehearsed answers. While there is nothing wrong with a prepared interviewee, hiring managers have begun to utilize out-of-the-box interview questions in order to observe the candidate’s thought process when faced with the unexpected.

These unusual interview questions allow the interviewer to determine the candidate’s ability to handle unanticipated situations and allow the individual to demonstrate their thought process and character under pressure. While there is little a job seeker can do to prepare for such questions, it is important to remember that these odd queries provide a unique opportunity to showcase creativity, quick thinking, poise, and even a sense of humor.
