Workplace Stress, Can it be Managed?

Unfortunately in today’s day and age, stress is inevitable in the workplace. With the work days growing longer, they are no longer just 8-5 Monday through Friday. Employees are not just focused on getting in their standard 8 hours, but rather on achieving goals and meeting quotas that are set by either themselves or their employers. Some employees may be overwhelmed by the workflow due to limited resources and a limited number of employees in their department.

In a recent 2015 article in HR Magazine, “Overwhelmed at Work”, Dana Wilkie discusses some of the stress related challenges that employees and employers may face, and some potential tips on how to help reduce stress at work.large_4774087006

A March 2015 survey of 160,000 employees around the world found that more than 1 in 3 employees reported feeling above-average stress. With email and text, the work and personal time has gotten harder to separate.

On its website, the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) defined job stress as “the harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources, or needs of the worker.”

To ease workers’ stress, NIOSH suggests the following strategies:

Get Feedback. Give employees the opportunities to participate in decisions that affect their roles and responsibilities.

Prioritize tasks. Identify what is most important and what can wait by setting clear deadlines and tasks.

Provide resources. Provide training and assistance to employees who are coping with a difficult work situations.

Seek advice. Consider hiring a consultant who can recommend ways to improve work conditions and examine if the workload is in line with workers’ capabilities and resources.
