Increasing Company Loyalty With Adoption Benefits

large_9368208567It’s very common, and sometimes mandated, that a company provides some sort of maternity or paternity leave for parents who wish to grow their families.  However, one important benefit that roughly less than half of companies, according to HR Magazine, provide is an adoption benefit.  Currently offering an adoption benefit is a growing trend and in this blog I’m going to talk about what to consider when building your own company’s adoption benefit and how it will increase loyalty across your entire organization, regardless of whether or not an employee uses it.

Adoption is simply another form of labor and delivery.  It’s an emotional journey with financial strain, but like growing a biological family, adoption is worth whatever you must go through to have a child.  When building an adoption benefit for your company, consider reimbursing employees for the following:

  • Application fees
  • Home-study fees
  • Agency & placement fees
  • Legal fees and court costs
  • Immigration, immunization, and translation fees
  • Transportation, meals & lodging
  • Parent, child and family adoption counseling

Also, remember to be flexible with your employees’ schedules while they are going through the adoption process.  While a pregnant employee may be able to give you a due date to plan for, often times a scheduled adoption can happen much sooner or later than originally planned.  There may also be sporadic trips to the country their child is coming from, necessary days off for home visits, and a longer adjustment period after the actual adoption takes place.

Building Loyalty

Companies that offer adoption programs and regularly remind employees of this benefit will increase loyalty by showing they are a company that cares for employees and their families.  Even if employees don’t take advantage of this benefit, they may know a coworker who has, thus increasing loyalty across the entire organization.
